This year at holiday time, we were gifted with money to invest in underdeveloped countries through the Kiva organization. Kiva.org is a non-profit that allows you to make a small 0% loan to low income entrepreneurs in the developing world (microfinance). Individuals can help provide affordable working capital for the poor -- money to buy a sewing machine, livestock, etc. -- and empower them to earn their way out of poverty.

We have invested in five individuals and four groups. These individuals and/or groups reside in Uganda, Cambodia, Bolivia, Lebanon, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan. The types of industries these entrepreneurs are involved range from construction, weaving, selling goods, tailoring to animal sales and charcoal sales. We are excited to be able to be a part of this organization.

UPDATE:
8-14-08 - Location: Nau, Tajikistan - Ishnazarova trades in the bazaar where her trade outlet is located. She is engaged in the special material for the national dress selling industry. She requested a loan to widen her existing assortment of materials and to develop her existing business. She borrowed money 7 months ago and will repay in full in September.

5-6-08 - Location: La Paz, Bolivia - Marco is manufacturing bricks again. He bought the tools and he says that is almost sure he will request a second credit to rebuild or to construct a wall in his house (which collapsed due to the rains).

4-30-08 - Each of the groups and the individuals that we have invested in have done well. Each has made their third loan repayment. One of the loan recipients is almost half way to repaying her loan back.

3-31-08 - Each of the groups and the individuals that we have invested in have done well. Each has made their second loan repayment.

2-29-08 - Each of the groups and the individuals that we have invested in have done well. Each has made their first loan repayment.

1-31-08 - All groups and individuals that we invested in have received the monies to either start their business or to grow their business.
